Where to Go Out for Inexpensive Drinks in Houston

Houston is a popular tourist destination best known for its Space Center, multicultural population, and vibrant nightlife.

Moreover, the cost of living in Houston is below the country’s average, and many local bars follow the same trend by offering a wide range of affordable options.

Having visited Houston many times over, I’ve grown familiar with its top spots to grab a delicious drink without breaking the bank. So if you’re looking for the best cheap bars in Houston, read on for the list of my favorites!

Located in Midtown, Lola’s Depot is a cheap bar and also a dive bar that proves great affordable drinks are off the beaten path.

Smaller on the inside with souvenirs and memories all over the wall, it has plenty of seating on the outdoor patio. In addition, you can play pool here or queue up a favorite song on the jukebox.

There are daily happy hour specials, and the bar serves very affordable draft and bottled beer, wine, and mixed drinks.

Poison Girl is an eclectic dive bar in Hyde Park, making a name for itself with cool, laidback vibes that border on punk.

Decorated with female-inspired artwork on bright red walls, this is where to get drinks when you want to play arcade pinball because they line the walls in the back.

Here you’ll find an extensive but affordable whiskey and bourbon selection, plus a long list of local beer in cans, bottles, and drafts.

Located in the Montrose neighborhood, Catbirds Cocktails and Trivia is a local hangout spot that’s dimly lit, moody, and perfect for a low-key night out.

Grab a cozy table indoors, or sit in the sun in the outdoor seating area. Try visiting for their regular events like live music, trivia nights, and daily happy hour specials.

Catbirds serves up plenty of cheap and cheerful cocktails like Lemon Drops, draft beer, and a good selection of wine.

Situated in the Great Jones Building, Sunny’s is a casual and divey place to grab a cheap drink without all the frills of bigger bars.

You can bring some friends for a game of pool or pick a song on the jukebox but don’t miss happy hour with free popcorn and plenty of specials like cheap Jello shots.

Outside of happy hour, cheap beer and cocktails make it one of those fun places to go out to.

Three Sheets Bar & Grill sits next to the A+ hair salon in the same building. With its patio outside and dark decor inside, it’s a bit of a dive bar but still one of those friendly places to go out.

While you’re there, play darts or pool, sing karaoke, or just hang out with friends.

Along with a limited menu, Three Sheets Bar & Grill offers a great beer selection and a selection of classic cocktails.

The Dog House Tavern is the go-to bar for service industry professionals to grab drinks after work in Midtown.

This is one of the locals’ favorites when they need comfortable and fun places to get drinks in Houston. There are games to play, cheap drinks, and delicious pizzas, too, but you can also have food delivered to the bar.

Happy hour specials include cheap domestic beer, spirits, and great wine slushies

Molly’s Pub

Molly’s Pub, a local’s favorite Irish bar, sits on the edge of the Theatre District, offering cheap drinks for anyone needing a pick-me-up after a show.

A friendly, casual pub, they have sports on TV, a big wooden bar from Ireland, and a menu of hearty Irish fare. They’ll treat you well if you’re a tourist or a local.

For drinks, they have a good selection of Irish whiskeys, draft beer, and of course, Guinness.

Please drink responsibly, be fully accountable with your alcohol consumption, and show others respect.

I have always had a deep interest in the restaurant and bar industry. My restaurant experience began in 1997 at the age of 14 as a bus boy. By the time I turned 17 I was serving tables, and by 19 I was bartending/bar managing 6-7 nights a week.

In 2012, after a decade and a half of learning all facets of the industry, I opened my first restaurant/bar. In 2015, a second location followed, the latter being featured on The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
