New York City isn’t just Manhattan. It encompasses five unique boroughs, each with a distinct array of neighborhoods, attractions, and cultural experiences. My latest trip to the big apple sent me across the East River from Manhattan to the Long Island borough of Queens.

Along with its gorgeous parks, iconic World’s Fair Globe sculpture, and Mets baseball stadium, Queens has a great bar and restaurant scene.

Katch Astoria

Named for the famed Long Island City neighborhood in which it lies, Katch Astoria is a family-friendly beer garden, taproom, gastropub, and sports bar in a massive indoor and outdoor space.

The indoor space has a 50-tap taproom, banquette spaces, dining rooms, and more, with an impressive cocktail bar and delicious fusion cuisine.

There’s always a fun event at Katch, whether it’s bottomless brunches or trivia nights.


The Attic

The Attic is a swanky and elegant oyster and cocktail bar in Flushing, Queens, with a romantic atmosphere and gypsy-chic décor. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a happy hour with your significant other.

The Happy Hour deals at The Attic include dollar oysters and discounts on their expertly mixed craft cocktails. I loved the Smoking Life mezcal cocktail with pineapple juice, green chartreuse, lime, and jalapeno.


Carla

Located in the heart of Long Island City, in an adorable and cheerful space with tropical chic décor, Carla is a restaurant and bar serving a myriad of global soul foods and tropical cocktails.

Along with highly creative cocktails, Carla offers four beers on tap from independent breweries, along with cans, bottles, and wines.

I recommend the Watermelon Frose with rum, rose lemon, and watermelon basil slush.


Keuka Kafe Wine Bar & Kitchen

Keuka Kafe Wine Bar and Kitchen is a charming and intimate wine bar and eatery in Forest Hills, offering gourmet meals, snacks, and an eclectic wine list.

The rustic chic atmosphere and friendly service make Keuka Kafe a neighborhood favorite for small groups or couples’ happy hours.

I was especially impressed by their extensive meat and cheese lists to create your own charcuterie or cheese board.


Sweet Afton

Another Astoria neighborhood haunt, Sweet Afton is a craft beer and cocktail bar and award-winning gastropub fare in a stunning industrial meets urban chic space.

My favorite part about Sweet Afton is its beautiful patio with tiled floors, hanging vines, a skylight, and a panoramic mural of misty mountains.

They have a long three-hour happy hour on weekdays with discounted cocktails, spirits, draft beer, and wines.


D’Antigua

D’Antigua is a lively and fun music venue, bar, and restaurant in Jackson Heights with a Latin and Caribbean vibe. There’s a full lineup of live music and DJ sets for you to dance the night away with a cocktail in hand.

They offer a wide variety of tropical, classic, and seasonal cocktails, beer, and a full menu of American food.


The Trestle

Located in the heart of Astoria in a spacious industrial chic space with a large streetside deck, The Trestle is a 5th generation family-owned New American restaurant.

The modern, artsy and urban environment is lively and fast-paced just like the big apple with an extensive food and drink menu. I went for their all-day Friday happy hour to enjoy a discounted burger and Moscow Mule.


Judy & Punch

Judy and Punch is an Astoria neighborhood cocktail bar and lounge with a rotating tap list of 14 beers, craft cocktails, and free popcorn.

The cozy atmosphere features a jukebox, funky taxidermy decor, and a spacious seating area. I went during the winter months and savored a delicious Caramel Apple Toddy.


The Beast Next Door

Located in the heart of Long Island City, THe Beast Next Door is an artisanal cocktail bar in a unique space with hand-crafted wood furniture made from recycled church pews.

Culture Trip praised The Beast Next Door as one of the best bars in Long Island City. They have a weeknight happy hour from 4-7 pm with cheap shots, beer, and discounted cocktails.


La Sala
