Bar 1919

1420 S Alamo St, San Antonio, TX 78204
(210) 227-1420
Visit Website

Revered as an ode to craftsmanship, American history, and whisk(e)y, 1919 takes you a step back in time to the era of prohibition. Hidden away in the Blue Star Complex of San Antonio, like most speakeasies of yesteryear, you wouldn’t see 1919 if you hadn’t already heard of it.

I really loved the drink I ordered, Blue Grass Fizz with bourbon, honey, ginger, fresh lemon juice and topped with soda. Our bartender also recommended a few of the other drinks on the menu; Japanese Cocktail, Sazerac, and Lingonberry Lick.

George’s Keep

17803 La Cantera Terrace, San Antonio, TX 78256
(210) 310-3733
Visit Website

George’s Keep focuses on expertly crafted cocktails that are diverse enough to suit all tastes. From the Asbinthe Frappe and a twist on a Pisco Sour, to an expertly mixed Old Fashioned, the bar is extremely approachable. The focus on mixology is not a new concept for owner Steve Mahoney, who highlights craft cocktails at his other location, Blue Box at the Pearl.

I got the Stay Woke cocktail which has Rittenhouse Rye, Frangelico, maple syrup, Punt e Mes infused with coffee beans, black walnut bitters! Other drinks I would recommend are the Some Great Fate, Not Guava, and Pina Cachaca.

SoHo Wine and Martini Bar

(210) 444-1000

The Esquire Tavern opened in 1933 to celebrate the end of Prohibition and has been a beloved San Antonio watering hole ever since, with a short hiatus from 2006 to 2011.

The Esquire is dark, cool, redolent with history, and serves cold, cold beer, swanky cocktails, and excellent food.

The Moscow Mule was absolutely delicious and had vodka, esquire ginger beer, and lime. Other great cocktails I tried were the A Wretch Like Me, Martinez, and Unknown Pleasure. This spot is a must-visit!

Whatever you’re in the mood for, they always do their best to accommodate your desired libation request in their intimate living room. My all time favorite drink at this spot is the Hot Buttered Rum. It comes with instant espresso, amaretto, whiskey & cream, hot buttered rum, made with Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream, butter, and house rum mix and is absolutely delicious! I also tried the Mezcal Toddy and Hot Toddy which were equally as good.
