Bourbon Milk Punch

We researched this drink and discovered that its history goes back to the 1600s; however, its popularity increased in the 1700s through the mid-1800s. 17th-century playwright Aphra Behn has been credited with making the drink famous since she mentioned it in one of her plays. Some believe that she is the creator of the drink.

About the Bourbon Milk Punch

Many, including Benjamin Franklin, have enjoyed this beverage, who reportedly created his personalized version of this drink that he shared with friends in a letter back in 1763. Mixologists who create this drink now have made it less intense, including only some of the ingredients included in his version of this beverage.

Charles Dickens is said to have enjoyed milk punch, and over a century after his passing, people found bottles of the drink in his wine cellar. There are no reports on whether the punch was still consumable, but the bottles were there!

The term punch indicates that there are five ingredients in the drink. The Sanskrit word for five is pañc. It doesn’t have to include alcohol, but this milk punch does.

There are two kinds of milk punch; bourbon or brandy milk punch, a popular drink in 18th century New Orleans, and English milk, also known as a clarified milk punch. When you add hot milk to a mixed cocktail, it curdles. The milk then has to be strained through a cheesecloth to remove the curds, leaving a clarified beverage.

Anytime is a good time to make a bourbon milk punch. You can enjoy this drink on the rocks during warmer temperatures and have it as a warm drink to heat you during colder seasons. Who couldn’t use a warm bourbon milk punch after shoveling a few inches of snow?

Even though this drink is called a bourbon milk punch, you aren’t limited to using bourbon to make it. You can use any dark liquor to make your milk punch. This selection includes brandy and rum or any other dark liqueur you’d like to try!

This drink is also an excellent substitute for eggnog if you or your guests would prefer to have a drink without egg in it. If you’re looking for a vegan option, a bourbon milk punch with almond milk will do the trick!

Ingredients to Make a Bourbon Milk Punch:

  • 2 ounces of bourbon (brandy or rum)
  • 3 ounces whole milk (If you prefer non-dairy milk, you can use half and half or almond milk)
  • Two dashes of vanilla extract
  • Sweetener of your choice
  • Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg

Directions:

  1. Combine the bourbon, milk, vanilla extract, and your choice of sweetener into a jug. You can add ice if you like.
  2. Shake or stir your liquids and pour them into the glass you want to serve the drink in. If you want your drink foamy, you can mix it in a blender or hand mixer.
  3. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.
  4. Enjoy your drink!

If you’re making this drink for a party, you can prepare it a day before and save time on the day of the event without worrying about it not tasting right. Once you mix the drink, it can stay in the fridge for at least two to three days.
