It is not a difficult drink to make, but the Greyhound is a delicious thing to drink! It is simply made with grapefruit juice and your choice of vodka or gin. It is just the right amount of acidic, making it very refreshing. Perfect for a sunny day, or perhaps a good choice for a brunch cocktail.
About & History
It was first mentioned in print in the “Savoy Cocktail Book” which was written by the legendary bartender and writer Harry Craddock. The book was published in 1930. In it, Harry tells readers how to make this simple drink with just grapefruit juice, gin, and ice. Vodka came to the United States market in around 1950 and as it gained in popularity the cocktail was more often served with vodka than gin.
The restaurant chain, Post House, is operated at Greyhound bus terminals. They serve the drink with vodka on their menus. As these restaurants are visited by people who like to travel all over America, the vodka variation accelerated in popularity.
Which Spirits To Use
In the modern world, both spirit variations can easily be found, so it’s best to try them and find out which one you enjoy the most. When making something this simple, the most important thing to remember is to buy the best quality ingredients that you can get. A bad base spirit or poor quality, out-of-season fruit will be easily detected by the drinker!
Which Juice To Use
In the past, some bars have chosen to use canned grapefruit juice when they make this drink. We think that squeezing your own fresh juice gives a better final flavor that is punchier and gives better refreshment. This is the same principle as using fresh orange juice in a Screwdriver.
As both of these drinks contain a fruit juice which you commonly find on the breakfast table, they are both an excellent choice for brunch or breakfast cocktails or a quick pick-me-up later in the day. As grapefruit are so large and contain a lot of juice, you will usually only need one to make one serving of the drink.
If you want to try a little bit of a twist on this classic then add salt to the rim of your glass. Hey presto! You’ve made yourself a Salty Dog instead. This is such an easy take on the original and it can also be made with vodka or gin as you prefer. There is something delightful about the addition of a salty hit with each delicious sip.
