Margaritas by the Pitcher Cocktail

The only thing that beats enjoying a fresh, ice-cold margarita from the comfort of your own deck is enjoying a round of them with your closest friends. The more, the merrier, right? And by one round, we mean two – or three – and that calls for a nice, tall pitcher of margaritas. 

Making margaritas by the pitcher is easier than it sounds, and it’s super-efficient for a backyard get-together. So call your friends over, grab some fresh ingredients, and let’s get this fiesta started. 

About and History

If you want to please a crowd, one of the best things you can do is pull a margarita pitcher out of your fridge. Margaritas come with a rich history, combining the classic Mexican liquor with refreshing lime and orange flavors. 

If you take a stroll through history, you will find that margaritas have been stealing the spotlight behind bars since the early 1940s. While we can trace back the timeline, it’s a little harder to pinpoint exactly who created the popular cocktail.

Some credit Pancho Morales, others recognize Margarita Sames, and still more look to Carlos “Danny” Herrera. 

Although we don’t know exactly who to thank for this refreshing, fun classic, we can always raise a glass to tequila and its Mexican heritage. 

Since its inception, the margarita has seen many alterations. You can find it in basically any flavor, and it even gets mixed with other alcohol like wine and beer. Today, we’ll stick to a classic recipe that you can’t beat. 

Ingredients

You may find some variances across different recipes concerning ingredients, but we’re going to stick to the list below: 

  • 10 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 3 ½ oz. agave syrup (or simple syrup)
  • 22 oz. tequila
  • 14 oz. Cointreau
  • 12 lime wheels for garnish

Other recipes may include things like triple sec or another orange liqueur, and some will leave out the agave or simple syrup. We like the extra sweetness in our margaritas, though. 

How to Make Margaritas by the Pitcher

Mixing up a cocktail is one thing, but making a large batch can get a tad bit trickier. If you want to make the perfect pitcher of drinks, follow this recipe: 

  1. Select a 52-ounce pitcher and add both the Cointreau and lime juice. Stir well to combine. 
  2. Add in the agave or simple syrup along with the tequila. Stir these ingredients in, then taste your mixture. The drink will eventually be diluted by ice, so you’re looking for a strong flavor. 
  3. Pour 4 ounces at a time into a shaker filled with ice. Shake until the mixture is cold and strain into a prepared margarita glass with fresh ice. 
  4. Garnish the glass with a lime wheel or lime wedge, and enjoy! 

To prepare your margarita glass, pour salt into a shallow dish. Wet the rim of the glass using a lime wedge and dip the rim into the salt to coat it. The salt will add a nice touch to your margarita with an authentic feel.
