Surfer on Acid

Jägermeister is one of the most well-known alcohols in the world, famous for its licorice taste and being the drink of choice for the GTL set—that’s Gym, Tan, Laundry, for those of you who aren’t a fan of MTV’s The Jersey Shore.

While you may think of Jäger as more of a traditional party drink for muscleheads, it lends its complex taste to many different classic cocktails, including the Surfer on Acid.

Jägermeister, Pineapple Juice, and Coconut Rum: Surprisingly Delicious

However, Jägermeister is actually a complex spirit, produced by steeping in a 56-herb-and-spice blend in alcohol and water, including juniper, ginger, citrus peel, and anise. After soaking, the mixture is then aged for one year in an oak barrel and then sweetened just a tad before bottling.

It might be best known as a party drink for spring breakers and college students everywhere, but used correctly, Jägermeister can make a delicious cocktail that’s a little more serious than, say, a Jäger Bomb.

The recipe below is an excellent example of this—there’s no dumping a shot of jager in cheap beer for this cocktail! Instead, it takes the herbal and licorice notes of Jäger and combines them with… rum and pineapple juice?

It may sound like a strange choice of ingredients, but this drink is one of those surprising cocktails that sounds unappealing but is unbelievably delicious.

The Surfer on Acid: A General History

This cocktail was created in the 90s by Los Angeles bartender Eric Tecosky. It’s also one of the easiest to make: just add equal amounts of each ingredient.

It’s also a versatile recipe because it can be enjoyed as a shooter, cocktail, or straight-up for those who prefer that method. However, most agree that this drink is best served on the rocks, which helps dilute the bold kick of herbal notes from the Jägermeister.

In fact, the Jäger provides a robust foundation for this drink, with the coconut rum and pineapple juice balancing out the bitter notes with light and fruity flavors. The best way to kick up the taste of this cocktail is by using fresh pineapple juice.

If you can’t find fresh, buy high-quality bottled juice. It adds a bright pop of acidity and sweetness, which is offset perfectly by the bitter licorice and herbal flavors from the Jäger.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Jägermeister
  • 1 oz coconut rum
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • Garnish with a pineapple wedge

Directions

  1. Gather all the ingredients, a cocktail shaker, and a tall glass
  2. Combine the Jägermeister, coconut rum, and pineapple juice into an ice-filled shaker, and shake until it’s well-chilled
  3. Strain and pour into a tall glass filled with ice
  4. Finish it off with a pineapple wedge garnish
  5. Serve immediately, sip, and enjoy

You may not think the bitter licorice flavors of Jäger would pair so perfectly with the classic fusion of pineapple juice and coconut rum, but it does, bringing a slightly Caribbean-esque feel to it. Ultimately, this cocktail brings an equal amount of delight and refreshment.

That’s why it’s the perfect choice for a hot sunny day, whether it’s spent at the pool, the bar, or even surfing on a beach somewhere in the Caribbean—acid optional!
