Tokyo Tea

The Tokyo Tea is a cousin to that famously boozy and long-time favorite, the Long Island Iced Tea. A good helping of melon liqueur gives it a fresh green hue and is the basis for its name. The drink wasn’t invented in Tokyo, but this distinctive ingredient is Japanese all the way.

Japanese Midori melon liqueur is world-famous, made from Japanese grain spirits and their local muskmelon and yubari melon. This is the melon liqueur of choice and for good reason. There is no beating its smooth, fruity, and musky profile.

The sweet melon flavor and lush color of the liqueur come through in this cocktail, even at a measure of a half-ounce. Aside from the melon, this drink differs from its Long Island relative by using club soda instead of cola.

A Sweet and Sour Twist

This drink is sweet with just a hint of sourness. To achieve the right flavor, you can either use a store-bought sweet and sour mix or make your own version with fresh lime juice and a sugar-water syrup. This is made by dissolving sugar into an equal measure of water. 

It doesn’t get any simpler or fresher, and you can control the ingredients precisely to your tastes. Making it yourself is also healthier, bypassing the artificial sweeteners and additives of the bottled mixers. It’s always nice to know exactly what you’re putting into your body.

Dangerously Delicious

Bottled or fresh, this drink has choice ingredients that make a truly scrumptious beverage. We drink it for the delicious sweet melon overtones and slight tangy kick. Well, OK, maybe for that other kick too. You don’t taste it much, but this drink is just as notoriously alcoholic as its cousin. 

Just like with the Long Island Iced Tea, somehow the mix of ingredients mellows out the alcoholic flavor and makes for a dream of a cocktail. This drink goes down easy. Too easy. Sweet with a twist of tang, boozy but smooth, this is a great summer party drink for those warm and endless summer evenings.

Tokyo Tea Ingredients

  • 1/2 ounce melon liqueur
  • 1/2 ounce vodka
  • 1/2 ounce gin
  • 1/2 ounce tequila
  • 1/2 ounce rum
  • 1/2 ounce triple sec
  • 1 ounce sweet-and-sour mix, store-bought OR
  • 1 ounce homemade sweet and sour (juice of 1 lime, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and 1/2 cup water)
  • 1 splash club soda
  • 1 slice of lemon
  • 1 maraschino cherry

Steps

  1. Add all the alcoholic ingredients into a highball glass
  2. Add your choice of sweet and sour mix
  3. Drop in a few cubes of ice and stir well
  4. Add a lashing of club soda
  5. Finish with a slice of lemon and a cherry on top

Homemade Sweet and Sour Mix

  1. Bring 1/2 cup water to boil and stir in 1/2 cup sugar until dissolved
  2. Add fresh lime juice to taste

There you have it! A fresh and fruity green treat of a drink, with a twist of lemon and lime, and a sweetness that makes it oh so easy to have just one more. Now you can impress all your friends with a new cocktail recipe for drinks out on the lawn.
