Instructions

To Make the Chai Simple Syrup:

  • Bring 1 cup of water to a boil in a small pot.
  • Remove from heat, add chai tea bags, cover, and steep for 10–15 minutes.
  • Discard the tea bags, then stir in the sugar while the tea is still warm.
  • Bring the mixture back to a gentle simmer for about 3 minutes, then remove from heat.
  • Stir in vanilla extract and let it cool completely. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

To Make the Old Fashioned:

  • In a mixing glass, add bourbon, lemon juice, bitters, and chai syrup.
  • Fill with ice and stir until well chilled.
  • Strain into a rocks glass with a large ice cube.
  • Garnish with a cinnamon stick, star anise and orange slice.

Notes

Pro Tips

  • For a richer flavor, use a robust bourbon like Woodford Reserve or Elijah Craig.
  • Adjust sweetness by adding more or less chai syrup to taste.
  • Warm your syrup slightly before using to intensify the spice aroma.
