Start by filling a cocktail glass with ice cubes or place it in the freezer to chill.
Mix the Cocktail:
In a cocktail shaker, add a handful of ice cubes.
Pour in 1 1/2 ounces of bourbon or rye whiskey.
Add 1 ounce of Cointreau or your chosen orange liqueur.
Add 1/2 ounce of sweet vermouth.
Add 1/2 ounce of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
Shake:
Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds. The goal is to dilute the cocktail slightly with the ice, while chilling it thoroughly.
Prepare the Garnish:
Remove the ice from your chilled glass or take the glass out of the freezer.
Using a knife or a vegetable peeler, cut a thin strip of lemon peel, being careful to avoid the bitter white pith.
Optionally, you can twist the lemon peel over the glass to release its oils, adding an extra zing of citrus aroma.
Strain:
Strain the cocktail into the chilled glass, ensuring no ice shards make their way into the final drink.
Garnish and Serve:
Drop a brandied cherry into the glass.
Twist the lemon peel over the drink to release more oils, then rub the rim of the glass with the peel and drop it into the drink as well.
Serve immediately and enjoy.
