Equipment

  • Large pot or saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Mugs or heatproof glasses

Ingredients

  • 750 ml red wine
  • 1 orange sliced into rounds
  • 1/4 cup sugar adjust to taste
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • Optional: a splash of brandy for extra warmth

Instructions

  • Combine the wine, orange slices, sugar, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise in a large pot.
  • Gently warm the mixture over low heat for about 20 minutes. Make sure it doesn't boil; we just want it nice and warm.
  • Taste it and add more sugar if you like it sweeter.
  • Use a strainer to remove the spices and orange slices.
  • Serve warm in your chosen mugs or glasses.
  • If you like, add a splash of brandy to each cup for extra warmth.

Notes

Pro Tips

  • Choose a medium-bodied red wine like Merlot, Zinfandel, or Grenache for the best results.
  • Avoid boiling, as it can cook off the alcohol and make the wine taste harsh.
  • Add sliced apples or a touch of honey for variation.
