Virginia’s Beer Scene: History and What to Know

Virginia’s beer culture has deep roots, dating back to colonial times when English settlers, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, brewed ales at home. By the 1800s, German immigrants introduced lager brewing, particularly in Richmond, making it a regional hub. Prohibition in the 1920s slowed things down, but the craft beer movement, kicking off in the 1980s and exploding in the 2010s, brought Virginia back to life as a brewing powerhouse.

Today, Virginia is home to over 200 breweries, from cozy farmhouse operations in the Shenandoah Valley to modern taprooms in cities like Richmond, Norfolk, and Alexandria. State laws have evolved to support local brewers, encouraging innovation and growth. You’ll find a wide range of styles—hoppy IPAs, crisp lagers, barrel-aged stouts, and even sours made with local ingredients like Virginia-grown hops or Chesapeake Bay oysters.

Virginia’s beer scene thrives on its sense of place, blending history, community, and bold flavors. Whether you’re after a rare small-batch brew or just chilling with a flight at a local taproom, there’s something for everyone.

  1. I believe more time should have been spent in western VA. You missed some of the best in the commonwealth out here.

  2. So happy Adroit made the list. And whenever I’m near Richmond I stop into The Answer for some food and brew & I always take home something. I accidentally discovered Aslin picking my kids up from a summer theater camp when there was a huge line for one of their new brews one day. You never know where you will find your next good beer.

  3. Solid list of breweries splattered across the state a bit. Heavy in RVA. I’ve visited just over 50% of them. Best brewery can mean a lot of different things to all of us, such as location, atmosphere, styles of beers served, food experience, etc. I am 95% exclusively a heavier Stout and Porter hunter, so breweries such as Adroit and Commonwealth would be higher on my list. I like the smaller, unique locations. We all enjoy what we enjoy and we should all be working to keep the breweries in business.

  4. How is 2 Silos Brewing not on this list? And as number 1? It’s not only the number 1 production brewery in the state but it’s also the third largest venue in the state. Amazing beers, live music, and an insane campus. Big miss in this article.

  5. Please check out Southern Revere Cellars in Louisa, VA. They have an incredible variety of IPAs, lagers, sours, and a robust seasonal selection. SoRev is set on a gorgeous farm in Central Virginia and is the perfect place to bring your family. Dogs are welcome, too!

  6. Well evidently you have not been to the Elkton Brewery, Elkton, VA.I am sure if you have it would most definitely be on this list.
