Everyone has heard of, and likely tried, a piña colada. It is a simple cocktail with only three basic ingredients and a great introductory cocktail for those just learning how to mix drinks. This sweet and tangy delight is perfect on a hot day, or on any day, really. We have broken down below the history and how to make the famous tiki cocktail so you can visit your own mental beach whenever you like.
A Drink with History
A drink with such a bright and refreshing flavor profile is only heightened by its rich and colorful history. The cocktail was created in 1954 by Ramon “Manchito” Marrero at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1978 the cocktail was made the official drink of Puerto Rico. It was then honored again in 2004 for the drink’s 50th anniversary by the governor of Puerto Rico at the time, Sila Maria Calderon.
In its prime, this drink is beloved by vacationers and local bars alike. It has a bit of a goofy reputation, especially when taking into consideration the over-the-top garnishes and electric blenders. But we think that’s what makes it fun! Cocktails don’t always need to be serious; sometimes they can be tiki, and that’s just as good.

Make Your Own Piña Colada
There are a million different variations you can try when making this drink, but we have provided a list of the ingredients according to the International Bartenders Association to give you a basic idea of where to start. Everyone seems to have their own spin on the classic cocktail. However, be sure to use quality ingredients and watch the balance of sweet coconut and tangy pineapple–this can become an overly sugary drink if you aren’t careful.
- 2oz rum, white or dark are both okay
- 2oz coconut cream
- 1.5oz pineapple juice
- 1oz lime juice
- Slice of lime to taste (optional)
- Pineapple wedge garnish (optional)
How To Make
Mix all of the ingredients with crushed ice and blend until smooth.
Alternatively, mix the ingredients in the glass with cubed ice and serve. We recommend serving the drink with a slice of lime to cut through all the sweetness and a pineapple wedge for garnish.
Traditionally a Poco Grande glass is used for this cocktail, but any fun or goblet-sized glass will work. Part of the fun of this drink is to make it look as tropical as possible, so don’t hold back on the tiny umbrellas and maraschino cherries if that’s what makes you happy.
