Paloma

If you love a good margarita, then you need to try the Paloma. This sweet and tart cocktail is essentially the margarita’s first cousin. In fact, it’s one of the most popular drinks in Mexico. However, it is enjoyed worldwide as the perfect way to show off a truly spectacular tequila. This gorgeous pink cocktail is not only super refreshing and perfect for a hot day, but it’s easy to make, too, since it only needs tequila, grapefruit soda, and lime juice.

Brief History of the Paloma

The origin story for this zesty drink is steeped in mystery, as nobody seems to know who actually created it. However, most people seem to credit Don Javier Delgado Corona, owner of the infamous La Capilla bar in Tequila, Mexico. Others believe it’s named after the folk song of the same name, composed in the 1860s.

When it comes to creating this Mexican cocktail, Tequila Blanco is an ideal choice. However, you can also try a lightly aged Reposado. No matter what kind you choose, be sure to find a superior quality tequila. Buying from the low end of the spectrum will ultimately make the quality of your cocktail suffer.

Different Variations

If you really want to stick to a traditional recipe, choose Jarritos for your grapefruit soda. It’s a very popular brand in Mexico and adds some effervescence and light bubbles to your beverage. If you’re worried about finding it stateside, check out grocery stores that stock Mexican food. If you can’t find Jarritos, you can swap it out for Fresca or Squirt.

Try Fresh-Squeezed Grapefruit Juice

If you’re not a fan of soda, try using fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice instead. It offers just as much delicious refreshment, just minus the bubbles! However, you can always add sparkling water to the fresh-squeezed juice to keep those fun bubbles and light, airy deliciousness. Though it’s only a minor variation, it’s worth a try. However, grapefruit soda is the customary choice for this Mexican cocktail.

Another variation on the recipe is to rim the glass with salt or even just add a pinch right in the glass itself. While this step isn’t required, it makes for a fun addition and perfectly accents the tequila and tart, slightly bitter grapefruit. If you really want an extra kick of flavor, try using a pinch of seasoned or spiced salt.

Light, Airy, and Refreshing Citrus Cocktail

Making a Paloma is extremely easy since it doesn’t require a shaker. You can make this sweet and sour cocktail right in the glass. All you need to do is combine everything in a highball glass, sip, and enjoy! You don’t need to head south of the border to enjoy Mexico’s national cocktail—it’s the perfect choice for a balanced and refreshing drink no matter where you are.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz high-quality tequila
  • 1/2 oz fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • Grapefruit soda to top it off
  • Lime wheel or wedge to garnish
  • Salt garnish for the glass rim

Directions

  1. Coat the rim of your highball with lime juice, then dip it in a saucer of salt or sugar
  2. Combine the tequila and fresh-squeezed lime juice, add ice
  3. Top off the mixture with grapefruit soda
  4. Use a lime wheel or wedge for a garnish
  5. Serve, sip, and enjoy your fresh cocktail

If you’re tired of drinking the same old margaritas, then try its lighter and well-balanced twin, the Paloma. It may be the national cocktail of Mexico, but you don’t need to wait for Cinco de Mayo to enjoy this refreshing beverage. Made from tequila, grapefruit, and fresh-squeezed lime juice, this cocktail is simple and easy to make. Next time you’re feeling a little south of the border, try this airy and delicious cocktail!

Please drink responsibly, be fully accountable with your alcohol consumption, and show others respect.
