Sky Juice Cocktail

At times, you might hear bartenders refer to this cocktail as gully wash or as sky juice. Either way, it is a gin-based cocktail that is ideal for anyone who loves a tropical coconut flavor. Read on to learn more about what makes this cocktail such a fantastic option next time you are relaxing on the beach.

What is a Sky Juice Cocktail?

Sky juice is a cocktail with a gin base that comes from the Bahamas. It incorporates local ingredients like coconut water and ground nutmeg.

As has been the case from the beginning of this cocktail’s history, there are several ways that you can make this dirk. For example, you can choose between using fresh-ground nutmeg, cinnamon, or both.

Likewise, while some people prefer to use rum in their sky juice, a true version of the cocktail calls for gin.

After combining gin with condensed milk and coconut water, the result is a white liquid that can be somewhat heavy on its own. Despite that heaviness, people often drink sky juice with heavy meals or as an after-meal cocktail.

Regardless of how you prefer to enjoy sky juice, you can expect it to be a heavy drink. When local Bahamian bartenders make sky juice, they often focus on the alcohol content with smaller proportions of chaser ingredients. But of course, if you are making it yourself, you can set the ratios as you please.

History of the Sky Juice Cocktail

Sky juice first came into existence in the Bahamas during the prohibition era. At the time, local islanders had access to some low-cost alcohol that came from the United States. What they did not have was access to a wide range of juices and other common cocktail ingredients.

To accommodate for that lack of ingredients, Bahamian natives began mixing drinks using what was available. One of the most abundant ingredients on the island was, and is, coconut. So, naturally, the locals began mixing coconut water with their spirits.

Through that innovation, the sky juice cocktail was born. Today, this cocktail maintains its popularity and is one of the most popular drinks for those who live in and visit the Bahamas.
