History of the Golden Dream Drink
Golden Dream is an IBA (International Bartenders Association) cocktail made with Cointreau and Galiano.
One of the ingredients of Golden Dream, Galiano, is an Italian liqueur. The Galliano is what gives the drink its vanilla flavor.
Sometimes this drink is served in a parfait glass instead of a cocktail glass. It also goes well served over shaved or crushed ice in a rock glass. If you decide to go that route, use a straw, although this is not traditional.
How Strong Is Golden Dream?
Although this drink is devoid of whiskey, vodka, or other base spirits that are typically high-proof, it’s just as strong as most of those. Bottled at 80 proof, it gives Golden Dream a welcome punch.
Nevertheless, this cocktail is not as potent as a glass of wine, mixing up to just 15 % ABV (30 proof).
About the Golden Dream
As with most drinks, the history of Golden Dream is uncertain. However, Raymundo Alvarez is believed to have created this drink. He was a bartender at the Old King Bar in Miami, Florida, and he dedicated the cocktail to film actress Joan Crawford.
The drink grew popular in the 1960s on the East Coast of the US.
In 1964, a competition was organized in Hamburg by the International Bartenders Association, one of the competitors named Charon, won the competition with the Golden Dream cocktail.
Preparation Tips for a Golden Dream
For creamy cocktails such as Golden Dream, heavy cream is the most popular option. It’s an ideal choice because it lightens up during mixing and also provides a luscious drink.
Freshly squeezed orange juice brightens up this cocktail and complements the orange liqueur well. With just one orange, one can produce 2 to 3 ounces of juice.
Serve Golden Dream in a chilled glass. It helps marry the flavors and keeps your drink cold from start to finish.
Of course, storing cocktail glasses in the freezer is awkward. Therefore, always opt for a quick chill. Add a couple of ice cubes in the glass while mixing the drink, and then do away with them before straining.
Cheers!
