Bourbon Strawberry Iced Tea

Bourbon Strawberry Iced Tea

The first time I made this Bourbon Strawberry Iced Tea, it was during a weekend cookout where everyone wanted something cold but not overly sweet. After one sip, people kept asking for the recipe before the night was over.

This cocktail blends juicy strawberries, fresh lemon juice, smooth bourbon, and chilled iced tea into a drink that feels refreshing without losing that rich whiskey flavor. The strawberries brighten everything up, while the tea keeps it crisp and easy to sip. It tastes relaxed, familiar, and just a little more interesting than your average summer drink.

Why You’ll Love This

The Bourbon Strawberry Iced Tea combines classic Southern iced tea flavors with fresh fruit and smooth bourbon in a way that feels both refreshing and comforting. It’s light enough for warm weather but still has enough bourbon flavor to satisfy whiskey fans.

Here are a few reasons this cocktail stands out:

  • Easy to make with simple ingredients
  • Fresh strawberries add natural sweetness
  • Unsweetened iced tea keeps the drink balanced
  • Great for cookouts, parties, and brunches
  • Refreshing without tasting too sugary
  • Easy to scale into a pitcher for groups

Another reason I keep making this cocktail is how approachable it feels. Even people who normally don’t order bourbon cocktails usually enjoy this one because the tea and fruit soften the whiskey nicely.

Ingredients

The ingredient list is short, but every part works together to create a balanced drink that tastes fresh and smooth. Using quality ingredients makes a noticeable difference here, especially with the strawberries and tea.

  • strawberries sliced into quarters
  • 1 ounce lemon juice
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 3/4 ounce simple syrup
  • Unsweetened iced tea to top
  • blueberries, strawberries and mint sprig Garnish

Suggested Liquor Brands and Substitutions

The bourbon you use can slightly change the overall flavor of this cocktail. Sweeter, smoother bourbons tend to blend best with strawberries and tea.

Here are some excellent options and substitutions:

  • Maker’s Mark
Smooth and slightly sweet with soft vanilla flavors that work beautifully with strawberries.
  • Buffalo Trace
Balanced and easy to sip without overpowering the tea.
  • Four Roses Bourbon
Light and approachable, making it ideal for refreshing summer cocktails.
  • Woodford Reserve
Adds slightly richer caramel and oak notes for a deeper finish.
  • Honey syrup instead of simple syrup
Gives the cocktail a softer sweetness and richer texture.
  • Blackberry or raspberry instead of strawberries
Great alternatives if you want a darker berry flavor.

If you prefer a lighter cocktail overall, adding a splash of sparkling water can make the drink feel even more refreshing.

Equipment and Glassware

This cocktail doesn’t require complicated tools, which makes it perfect for casual entertaining or easy home bartending.

Here’s what helps:

A tall glass works best because it leaves enough room for ice, iced tea, and garnish without overcrowding the drink.

If you don’t own a muddler, the back of a wooden spoon works perfectly for crushing the strawberries.

How to Make It

This cocktail comes together quickly, but properly muddling the strawberries helps bring out the best flavor and color.

  1. Muddle Strawberries:
In a shaker, muddle the sliced strawberries until they are well crushed and juicy.
  2. Add Ingredients:
Add the lemon juice, bourbon, and rich simple syrup to the shaker.
  3. Shake:
Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
  4. Strain:
Strain the mixture into a tall glass filled with ice.
  5. Top with Iced Tea:
Top off the drink with unsweetened iced tea.
  6. Garnish:
Garnish with a few blueberries, a strawberry slice, and a mint sprig.

If you prefer a stronger bourbon flavor, reduce the amount of iced tea slightly. For a lighter version, add extra tea or a splash of sparkling water.

Pro Tips

Small adjustments can make this cocktail taste even better while improving the texture and presentation.

  • Use ripe strawberries for better flavor. Softer berries muddle more easily and taste sweeter.
  • Shake the cocktail well. This helps combine the lemon juice, bourbon, and strawberry mixture evenly.
  • Use cold iced tea. Warm tea melts the ice too quickly and waters down the drink.
  • Double strain for a smoother texture. A fine mesh strainer removes extra fruit pulp and seeds.
  • Use large ice cubes if possible. They melt slower and keep the drink colder longer.
  • Taste before adding more syrup. Some strawberries are naturally sweet enough on their own.
  • Add mint garnish at the end. Fresh mint smells best right before serving.

Once you’ve made the recipe once or twice, it becomes easy to adjust. Some people enjoy more lemon for tartness, while others like extra strawberry flavor.

Variations

One of the best things about this cocktail is how easy it is to customize. Small ingredient changes can completely shift the flavor while keeping the same refreshing base.

Here are a few variations worth trying:

  • Sparkling Strawberry Bourbon Tea
Add club soda for a bubbly version.
  • Peach Strawberry Bourbon Tea
Add peach slices or peach liqueur for extra fruit flavor.
  • Frozen Strawberry Bourbon Cocktail
Blend the ingredients with ice for a slushy summer drink.
  • Mint Strawberry Bourbon Smash
Muddle fresh mint with the strawberries for extra freshness.
  • Non-Alcoholic Strawberry Iced Tea
Skip the bourbon and add extra tea or lemonade instead.

I’ve also tried this cocktail with flavored iced teas like peach or raspberry tea, and both versions turned out surprisingly good.

When to Serve and Pairings

This cocktail feels made for warm weather gatherings, but honestly, it works year-round whenever you want something refreshing and easy to sip.

It’s especially great for:

  • Backyard cookouts
  • Summer parties
  • Brunch gatherings
  • Poolside drinks
  • Casual dinners
  • Holiday weekends

Food pairings that work especially well include:

  • BBQ chicken
  • Burgers
  • Pulled pork sandwiches
  • Strawberry shortcake
  • Grilled shrimp
  • Fresh fruit platters

If you’re building a cocktail menu, this drink pairs nicely with Whiskey Sours, Peach Bourbon Cocktails, Mint Juleps, or Bourbon Lemonades.

Storage and Serving Notes

This cocktail is best served fresh, especially once the iced tea is added. Still, you can prep most of the ingredients ahead of time if you’re entertaining.

The strawberry mixture can be prepared a few hours in advance and refrigerated until ready to use. Just shake it with ice right before serving.

For party batches:

  • Multiply the ingredients ahead of time
  • Store the bourbon mixture chilled
  • Add iced tea individually when serving
  • Keep garnish fresh until the last minute

If serving outdoors, keep the pitcher or cocktail base over ice so everything stays properly chilled.

FAQs

If you’re making this cocktail for the first time, here are some answers to questions people commonly ask.

Can I use sweet tea instead of unsweetened tea?
Yes, but the cocktail will become noticeably sweeter, so you may want to reduce the simple syrup.

What bourbon works best?
Smooth bourbons with caramel or vanilla notes pair best with strawberries and tea.

Can I use frozen strawberries?
Yes. Let them thaw first so they release more juice when muddled.

Can I make this cocktail in a pitcher?
Absolutely. It works very well for larger batches and parties.

Do I need a cocktail shaker?
No. You can stir everything directly in the glass, though shaking creates better flavor blending.

What tea works best?
Classic black iced tea works best because it pairs naturally with bourbon.

  1. This sounds wonderful! Beyond just increasing the quantities by alot… 🙂 any recommendations/thoughts on how to turn this into a punch? It seems like a crowd pleaser!

    • multiplying the quantities will be best to keep the integrity of the drink. just allow for the recipe to be made with no ice in the pitcher then pour over ice for each drink, this will stop dilution
