Classic Red Sangria

Classic sangria is a refreshing combination of fruit, sugar, liquor, and robust wine that mixes to form a delicious punch. Although we don’t know exactly when this drink was invented, we know that adding delicious ingredients to wine has been around for hundreds of years.


Drink Origins

It’s highly likely that this wine beverage goes all the way back to the Middle Ages. During those times, it was generally far riskier to drink water rather than wine. This drink is exceptionally popular in parts of Europe, specifically Portugal and Spain. Over time, it evolved into the modern-day version of this classic drink.


Although it has been trendy in Europe for centuries, this celebrated drink only made it to the United States in 1964, when it debuted at the New York World’s Fair. Americans first tasted the drink in the World Fair’s Spanish Pavilion, and the beautiful ruby color and the bold fruit-forward taste was an immediate hit with those in attendance. Since the mid-1960s, Americans have fully embraced this drink, featuring it at all sorts of festive gatherings like barbecues, parties, and other special events. It’s truly found a unique place right in the heart of Americana.



One of the most amazing components of this drink is that you can make it with virtually anything you have on hand. Since it originally hails from parts of Spain and Portugal, you can’t go wrong with Rioja wines such as tempranillo. Alternately, you can branch out to other types of reds, like pinot noirs or syrahs. Play around with other variables, too, like flavored liquors and different fruit.

  • Large Pitcher


  • 1 Orange
  • 1 Apple
  • 1 Lemon
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • ½ Cup Brandy
  • 1 Bottle Red Wine
  • ½ Cup Orange Juice


  • Slice the fruit into wedges or wheels
  • Muddle the sugar and fruit together in a large pitcher
  • Add the brandy and orange juice and mix thoroughly
  • Stir in the red wine 
  • Serve ice cold with a fruit garnish

We opt for a traditional combination of oranges, apples, lemons, and brandy for today’s recipe, but you should feel free to experiment with whatever feels right for you.



Although the most traditional recipes require a base of red wine, you can make this drink with just about any flavor of wine, including rose, sparkling wine, or white wine.  Additionally, it tastes best with more cost-effective wines, so you don’t need to break the bank to make a delicious batch. Budget wine is the way to go because the fruit needs to be the star. Any complex or overly tannic wines will not work with the fruity combination. You can keep your expensive bottles of wine for those times that you want to drink it without fruit.
