Who doesn’t enjoy a good margarita? It’s the perfect drink to let loose, forget about your workweek, and have a little fun. At the same time, a glass of wine is often the go-to choice after a long day.
What if you could combine the two?
Thankfully, someone else had that idea a long time ago, and the Devil’s Margarita was born. Offering both depths in flavor and appealing color, this margarita is ideal for anyone who enjoys tequila and wine but hates making decisions.
About and History
Like many popular cocktails today, the exact origin of the classic margarita is difficult to nail down. There are several stories that contribute to its beginnings, but who’s to say which is the truest of them all?
One story claims that a bartender named Carlos Herrera created the drink for a regular customer who was allergic to every liquor except tequila. Another legend states that the drink gets its name from a rich, Dallas society woman named Margarita Sames.
For every story about the margarita, it seems there are a dozen more. So, most people enjoy the cocktail without questioning where it came from – and just being thankful that it’s here today.
And today, there are several variations of the cocktail – with the Devil’s Margarita being just one of many. The standard margarita maintains a 7:4:3 ratio in terms of tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice.
However, the Devil’s Margarita calls for red wine, too. It’s hard to determine who exactly decided to pour their wine into a margarita one night, but we’ll forever be grateful for the medium-bodied red wine float.
How to Make a Devil’s Margarita Cocktail
Check out the ingredients needed to make the Devil’s Margarite below. This recipe serves one, so adjust as necessary:
- 1 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice
- ¾ oz. simple syrup
- 1 ½ oz. blanco tequila
- ½ oz. medium-bodied red wine
- Lime wedge for garnish
- Fill a shaker up with ice.
- Pour the lime juice, simple syrup, and tequila over the ice cubes and shakes well to combine and chill.
- Strain the drink into a cocktail glass.
- Slowly pour the wine over the back of a spoon to gently pool it on top of the drink’s surface, creating the red wine float.
- Use the lime wedge to garnish, and enjoy!
The best kind of wine to use for this cocktail is fruity, medium-bodied wine. We recommend using a cabernet franc, but this recipe would work well with any wine in this category, such as a merlot or a red blend.
