Watermelon Bourbon Smash

watermelon bourbon smash

Hot afternoons call for cold cocktails, and this Watermelon Bourbon Smash has become one of my favorite ways to use fresh watermelon during summer. The first time I made it, I honestly wasn’t sure how watermelon and bourbon would work together, but after one sip, I completely understood why people love fruit-forward bourbon cocktails.

This drink combines juicy watermelon, smooth bourbon, fresh lemon juice, mint, and simple syrup into a cocktail that tastes refreshing, balanced, and easy to sip. The watermelon softens the richness of the bourbon, while the mint and lemon keep everything crisp and bright. It’s perfect for cookouts, patio evenings, poolside drinks, or relaxed weekends with friends.

Why You’ll Love This

The Watermelon Bourbon Smash combines fresh summer flavors with smooth bourbon for a cocktail that feels refreshing without becoming overly sweet. It’s easy to make, beautiful to serve, and perfect for warm weather gatherings.

Here are a few reasons this cocktail stands out:

  • Fresh watermelon adds natural sweetness
  • Mint and lemon keep the drink refreshing
  • Easy to make with simple ingredients
  • Great balance of fruit and bourbon flavor
  • Perfect for summer entertaining
  • Beginner-friendly bourbon cocktail

Another thing I appreciate about this recipe is how versatile it feels. It works equally well as a casual afternoon drink or a cocktail served during dinner parties and gatherings.

Ingredients

This cocktail keeps things simple, but each ingredient helps create a balanced mix of sweetness, citrus, and smooth bourbon flavor.

  • 2 ounces Bourbon Choose a good quality bourbon for the best flavor.
  • 1/2 cup Fresh watermelon cubes This will give you the fresh watermelon juice you need.
  • 1 tablespoon Simple syrup To sweeten the cocktail. You can adjust this based on your taste.
  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon Adds a nice citrusy kick.
  • A few fresh mint leaves For a refreshing aroma and taste.

Suggested Liquor Brands and Substitutions

Since this cocktail relies heavily on fresh ingredients, smoother bourbons usually create the best balance. You don’t need an expensive bottle, but quality bourbon definitely improves the final drink.

Here are some excellent choices and substitutions:

  • Maker’s Mark
Smooth and slightly sweet with caramel notes that pair beautifully with watermelon.
  • Buffalo Trace
Balanced flavor with enough richness to stand out without overpowering the fruit.
  • Four Roses Bourbon
Lighter and approachable for refreshing summer cocktails.
  • Woodford Reserve
Slightly richer and deeper if you prefer stronger bourbon flavor.
  • Honey syrup instead of simple syrup
Adds softer sweetness with extra depth.
  • Lime juice instead of lemon juice
Creates a brighter and slightly sharper citrus flavor.

If you enjoy sparkling cocktails, adding a splash of club soda can make the drink even lighter and more refreshing.

Equipment and Glassware

One reason this cocktail works so well at home is that you don’t need advanced bar tools to make it taste great.

Here’s what helps:

A rocks glass works especially well because it keeps the drink cold while showing off the fresh watermelon color beautifully.

If you don’t have a muddler, the back of a wooden spoon works perfectly for crushing the watermelon and mint together.

How to Make It

This cocktail comes together quickly, but taking a little extra care while muddling helps release the fresh watermelon and mint flavors properly.

  1. Muddle the Watermelon and Mint:
In your cocktail shaker, add the fresh watermelon cubes and mint leaves. Use the muddler to gently crush them together until the watermelon is juicy, and you can smell the mint.
  2. Add the Wet Ingredients:
Pour in the bourbon, simple syrup, and lemon juice.
  3. Shake it Up:
Add a handful of ice cubes to the shaker. Put the lid on tightly, and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds. This not only chills the drink but also mixes all the flavors beautifully.
  4. Strain and Serve:
Strain the mixture into a glass filled with ice. If you like, you can double strain it to remove any small bits of watermelon or mint for a smoother drink.
  5. Garnish:
Add a sprig of mint or a small wedge of watermelon to the rim of your glass for that extra touch.
  6. Enjoy:
Give your drink a gentle stir, sip, and enjoy the fruity, bourbon goodness!

Some people enjoy extra mint for stronger herbal flavor, while others prefer adding more watermelon for sweeter fruit notes.

Pro Tips

A few small adjustments can make this cocktail taste even fresher and more balanced while improving presentation.

  • Use ripe watermelon for the best flavor. Sweeter watermelon creates better balance naturally.
  • Don’t over-muddle the mint. Press gently so the mint stays fresh instead of becoming bitter.
  • Use fresh lemon juice whenever possible. Fresh citrus gives brighter flavor.
  • Double strain for smoother texture. This removes extra watermelon pulp.
  • Chill the glass beforehand. Cold glasses keep the drink refreshing longer.
  • Taste before adding extra syrup. Watermelon sweetness can vary quite a bit.
  • Use large ice cubes when possible. They melt slower and preserve flavor longer.

Once you start making bourbon smash cocktails, experimenting with seasonal fruit becomes really fun.

Variations

One of the best things about the Watermelon Bourbon Smash is how customizable it is. Small ingredient swaps can completely shift the flavor while keeping the refreshing fruit base intact.

Here are some fun variations worth trying:

  • Sparkling Watermelon Bourbon Smash
Add club soda for a bubbly finish.
  • Frozen Watermelon Bourbon Smash
Blend everything with ice for a slushy summer cocktail.
  • Strawberry Watermelon Smash
Add fresh strawberries for extra berry sweetness.
  • Spicy Watermelon Bourbon Smash
Add jalapeño slices for gentle heat.
  • Non-Alcoholic Watermelon Smash
Skip the bourbon and add sparkling water instead.

I’ve also tried adding basil alongside the mint, and the herbal flavor worked surprisingly well with the watermelon and lemon.

When to Serve and Pairings

This cocktail feels made for summer gatherings and outdoor entertaining. The watermelon and mint combination instantly creates a cool, refreshing atmosphere.

Perfect occasions for serving this cocktail include:

  • Pool parties
  • Backyard cookouts
  • Summer brunches
  • Patio dinners
  • Holiday weekends
  • Relaxed happy hours

Food pairings that work especially well include:

  • BBQ chicken
  • Grilled shrimp
  • Fish tacos
  • Watermelon salad
  • Burgers
  • Fruit desserts

If you’re building a summer bourbon cocktail lineup, this drink pairs nicely with Mint Juleps, Bourbon Lemonades, Peach Bourbon Mules, or Whiskey Sours.

Storage and Serving Notes

This cocktail tastes best freshly shaken because watermelon and mint lose freshness over time. Still, some prep work can be done ahead for entertaining.

Watermelon cubes can be cut and refrigerated several hours ahead of time.

For parties:

  • Prep watermelon ahead of time
  • Keep bourbon and citrus chilled
  • Shake cocktails fresh before serving
  • Garnish immediately before serving

If batching multiple servings, wait to add ice until serving time so the cocktail stays flavorful and refreshing.

  1. Written recipe/instructions say nothing about muddling lemon wedges, only adding lemon juice after muddling watermelon and mint. Video says to muddle watermelon and lemon wedges, only adding mint leaves for the shake.

Which is it? Muddle lemon wedges? Only add lemon juice? Experiment…?
